This book is part of a group of titles I'm reading to support fellow authors in the Columbia, SC area. The author has done a great job of fantasy worldbuilding. The characters have unique backgrounds and abilities, which makes for a subtle yet effective reflection on our current societal issues. This first book in the series sets a strong foundation with many options for how future storylines may play out in subsequent titles.

The Dreamweaver Journey The Age of Awakenings Book 1 Tales from Feyron The Ripples of Power eBook Diana L Wicker Reviews

This book took me back to the books I read as a pre teen. A wonderful story line woven through several stories! I cannot say enough good things about this book. Wow...just ....wow! I love the whole storyteller idea. A central character telling the children tales-.and darn good tales at that! A world of magic that has gateways to other worlds, a place where all magic starts...In fact, the very first words "The Realm of Feyron has always been" in the preface is where the story started for me. That phrase sent chills down my spine, the good kind where I knew I was in for a great read. The main characters are easily lovable and I couldn't help but feel like I was one of the littles at the Storyteller's feet, listening as the tales unfolded through the night. A great introduction for more tales to come!
The Realm of Feyron is the origin of all things magical, the center point where all worlds meet. Once upon a time, there were several portals/entrances within the Temple of Pyli connecting the Worlds Beyond and spreading magic everywhere. Now many gateways are silent and Feyron weakens as the magic fades and the Guardians are lost.

For the first time in over 300 years a Dreamweaver has come of age and is tasked with contacting the Guardians. When she awakens in the night after a vision of her best friend lost and alone, injured in the snows at the top of the Crystal Mountains, she, her betrothed and her brother seeks out the Sacred Fire in the Temple in an attempt to call forth more information. A voice calls out from the fire, “Dreamweaver, you are summoned.” An image appears of an ancient path through the Mist Shrouded Forest leading to a hidden gate into the Crystal Caverns below the mountains. The Guardians have summoned her on a quest that will take her to the four realms of light within Feyron in search of answers and aid.

I really enjoyed this book. I loved the high fantasy elements and the author did a fantastic job of providing the reader with descriptive back-story to this magical universe. I was really taken in by the three teens and their quest to save their friend before it’s too late. The conflict was strong and I was rooting for them the whole time. I also loved the budding romance between the two couples. It was sweet and reminded me of my youth.

Two things held me back from giving this book a five star rating. The first was the Storyteller and the little children who were listening to the story. It was fine at first but as the book went on, in the middle of the action, the Storyteller would return and interact with the children. While this works for The Princess Bride, it doesn’t work for me here. I found it jarring and it took me outside of the characters.

The second thing that held me back was the first chapter or two. It was a little slow-moving and I found myself getting easily confused. There were so many characters being introduced and there was a lot of focus on the two teen couples at the Ball. Once I got through the Ball, though, the plot really started to move along at a good pace.

I would recommend this book and the rest of the series (which I am reading, by the way) to anyone who loves fantasy rich with world-building universes. Fans of Lord of the Rings, Games of Thrones and The Golden Compass will love this book and the rest of the series.

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

The Dreamweaver's Journey is a sweet fantasy for preteens and teens that takes the reader on a tour of a world the author invented for her children. It starts out with two pairs of young sweethearts becoming engaged at a ball. When one of the teens goes missing, the other three go searching for her, and find themselves on an adventure through their magical world where they meet the mythical Guardians and learn more about their own powers.

At first I had trouble with this book until I realized it's written for a much younger audience than the books I usually read are written for. With that perspective, I was better able to enjoy the journey through the world and the gentle lessons (mostly gentle; there's one shocking moment ) our young heroes and heroines learn. There's a framing device where the story is being told by a Storyteller to a group of children, which makes the target age of the book seem much younger. Going by the reviews, some readers enjoy this story around the story, but I found it distracting. The sections that cut away to the Storyteller can be skipped without missing anything important if you prefer to concentrate on the main plot. The novel also includes legends and history, which aren't essential for understanding what's going on, but are fun to read and add interest to the tour of the author's world.

The pleasant writing style invokes a charming, colorful world and is very easy to read. Recommended for readers of all ages who enjoy light YA fantasy.
My 10 year old daughter is an avid reader and absolutely loved this book. She ended up reading it in two days because she couldn't put it down.
The Dreamweaver's Journey is a 'delightful' read. It's the type of story that can be enjoyed by people of all ages. In fact, the dragons, magic, and adventure all made me feel like a little kid again. I especially loved the dragons and their method of communication.

The author does an amazing job at painting an intricate, beautiful picture of this world, all without droning on with tedious details as is so common in fantasy stories. Her writing has an old-fashioned, yet refreshing feel to it.

The story centers around a small group of young friends (teens) who find themselves taking part in an unplanned adventure when one of their friends goes missing. Along the way they find magical surprises, dragons, unicorns, scorpions and more. I found myself wanting to keep reading just to see what/who they would meet next.

I enjoyed this book and highly recommend it to anyone who loves a good fantasy. I'm interested to see what's coming in the 2nd book...
