Oklahoma Jazz Hall of Fame Bop drummer, composer, lyricist, and vocalist Artt Frank is one of the few authentic bop musicians on the scene today. He is best known for his friendship and professional association with trumpet immortal, Chet Baker, with whom he worked for many years.

Michael Armando, jazz musician and President of MJA Records, says of Chet Baker The Missing Years A Memoir by Artt Frank, “Artt tells it like it was, what it was like being a friend and a drummer for this great legend Chet Baker … When reading this book for the first time it is almost like you are being drawn into a time warp going back into time. Artt Frank takes you from the dark back alleys of drugs and despair to the shinning genius of Chet's playing smoke filled clubs and the streets … If you are a musician you will cherish it after reading it. Non-musicians will learn how great Chet Baker was and how great a friend drumming great Artt Frank was to Chet. The truth will set you free and Artt Frank has done this with his memoir. Amen... I give this book 10 stars...”

As reviewed by premiere jazz journalist and critic, Doug Ramsey, this memoir “…shows us sides of the great trumpeter that few people knew. In gripping detail, he [Artt] tells of the well-known drama in Baker’s life—the sudden fame, the struggle with drugs, the effects of a beating that almost ended his career. But Artt gives us new insights into Chet’s warmth, his love of family, his steely determination and the early emergence of his astonishing talent…This is a book of revelations."

I like to read books about musicians, mostly jazz musicians. As someone who used to play the trumpet, I naturally gravitate toward trumpet players and Chet Baker has always been one of my favorites. When he plays, you can hear his soul coming through the bell of his horn.
I believe that I have read all the books written about Chet. They are usually written by people who never actually met him. The books are a compilation of interviews from people who knew him and jazz musicians who performed with him. And, of course, they all had to stress the drug aspect.
Believe me when I tell you that, in that respect Mr. Frank's book is like a breath of fresh air.
First of all, since Mr. Frank knew Chet Baker and performed with him for years, you are getting a first-hand account of Mr. Baker, not second-hand opinions. Plus, Mr. Frank tells about Chet's sensitive nature and his many acts of kindness, which no one else knew about.
Mr. Frank first heard Chet's musici n 1954 over Armed Forces Radio. He made up his mind that someday, somehow, he would meet this talented trumpet player and perform with him, since Mr. Frank is a professional drummer.
He didn't meet Chet until years later, after Chet was savagely beaten, knocking out his front teeth and ending his trum-
pet playing days forever.. Or so he thought.
Mr. Frank made up his mind, after that first meeting, to do everything humanly possible to get Chet back on top, playing his trumpet again.
But, first he had to gain Chet's trust. This was not an easy task, since Chet was used to people befriending him, simply to get something out of him.
Mr. Frank wanted nothing from Chet. His only thoughts were looking for ways to help him.
This book describes his journey.
Giving this book 5 stars doesn't do it justice. I would gladly give it 10 stars, if I could.
If you want to read about the real Chet Baker, this is the book for you.

Chet Baker The Missing Years A Memoir by Artt Frank eBook Artt Frank Bobby Shew Reviews

I am a trumpet player, and naturally, a Chet fan. I have been moved by his music for years, and even stood on the sidewalk where he fell to his death. Artt Frank presents a far different Chet than any of the many sources I have read. Artt is a world class musician, and a fervent believer, to whom I ascribe total credibility. This book is totally based on first hand personal and professional interaction with Chet. I anxiously await volume two.
I thoroughly enjoyed this intimate look into the character and life of Chet during his "lost years." I'm glad this work is getting out there, giving people a clearer and less sensationalistic perspective into Chet's life and personality. Chet's beautiful playing (and singing) has touched many people over the years and continues to do so (I only discovered Chet in the early 90s by chance through a friend), and I am looking forward to the "part 2" of this book...Thank you, Art for sharing your experiences...
For someone who has tried to master the trumpet in his own way, I gravitated to Chet Baker's music through an almost magnetic attraction. I was somewhat dismayed by all the negative energy about him online which seemed to contradict what I heard in his music A soul of profound power and beauty through his art making a real statement about life through his unique sound and phrasing. When I bumped into Artt Frank online I was happy to see he offered another side of the famous trumpeter by someone who knew him personally and well. Artt was also very generous with his time with me on the phone and during visits to his Arizona home. So I had an awful lot of Artt's perspective on Chet before the book. But even with that I was blown away by the wonderful detail of this book. Even though it is a memoir it is at the same time a gripping narrative about a vital time in Chet's life. It had me on the edge of my seat. And as a trumpet player I can appreciate Artt relating elements of Chet's playing such as his breathing practices. And how Artt analyzes what made Chet so different stylistically from other trumpet players.gives us all tips on embrouchure and phrasing. I love the section where Chet describes to Artt how he approaches improvisation.. So if you have ever wanted to try to put your soul through a musical instrument like Chet did, Artt's book is a must!
Artt Frank writes in heartfelt prose about his friendship with Chet Baker. Artt has fashioned a memoir that is both poignant and enlightening, revealing the hardships of Baker's drug addiction during the lowest ebb of Baker's career. The book chronicles a young man journey from a small town in Maine who follows his dream to become a professional Jazz drummer, and befriends his lifelong idol, Chet Baker. Artt works with Baker to help him overcome his debilitating drug addiction, and eventually leads Chet to a comeback in the music industry. This book is recommended it to anyone who appreciates an inside look at the struggle of musicians and drug abuse.
What a joy it was to read my drummer friend Artt Frank’s very personal memoir of his friendship with Chet Baker during Chet’s difficult struggle to regain his chops after being severely beaten by thugs. From the time they first met, Artt had one thing in mind How can I help Chet get back on the music scene? And he truly did everything in his power to make that happen. He encouraged Chet, got his horn out of the pawn shop, set up gigs for him, played drums with him, and even drove him to meet his drug connections, all the while reminding him that he should be thinking about his wife and kids instead of wasting money on that “s***.” This book is as much about Artt as it is about Chet, although that wasn’t Artt’s intention. But because he’s a humble guy, he just sat down and wrote the thing as if it were a diary, so it comes across simple and clean with no pretensions or ulterior motives at all. The result is that you get to know both men in a very personal way. Through his strong faith, Artt never gave up on Chet, and Chet finally came back as a whole new version of himself. Can’t wait to read the sequel.
