(Though reviews are inherently subjective, I prefer to provide some organization to my opinions through the use of a personal rubric. The following notes may contain spoilers.)

Plot and Setting: 4 -- Plot has unique elements and no major holes, but a few shaky bits and/or a slight lack of focus. Plot points in sub-plots are dropped or not resolved. I really like the medical mystery aspect, as well as the reconciliation that happens between many characters. There's a good bit of talk about finding a church that reflects Jesus well, but we get no follow-up. Similar with Molly's mysterious plans for the "cathouse" she's bricking. Setting, including timeline, is clear and believable.

Characters: 5 -- Relatable, realistic, interesting, dynamic characters. Even minor characters have depth, as do the relationships between characters. The characters and motivations of Joy, Tressa, Molly, and Zack are most clearly developed, as we see their thoughts and perspectives at various points. All four grow and change and heal in different ways. Weston and Sylvia, brutally shaped by the loss of their son, and by his mother's cruel words, are also fairly well developed, and experience positive changes through the book.

Mechanics and Writing: 4 -- A handful of typos, punctuation issues, or word errors, but nothing that seriously hinders understanding. The child Joy and Zack treat in the ER is first called Dakota, but it then changes to Dillon and stays that way. Good use of alternating POV (Joy, Tressa, Molly, Zack). Generally skillful writing.

Redeeming Value: 4 -- Partially focused uplifting themes or lessons. Zack learns he was wrong to believe Weston's lies about Joy, especially without ever asking her about it. Joy processes her anger at his confession, and then forgives. Lots of issues of love, trust, and reconciliation in family relationships, too. Mention of churches failing to be loving and godly when they are too focused on gossip and judgment. Also touches on some of the consequences when believers marry unbelievers. Sex, alcohol, violence, etc, are not glorified, but some shaky ground, eg: Weston's drunkenness, both Weston and Sylvia sleeping around (including Weston persistently trying to seduce Joy, and telling Zack he had), creepy behavior from Sylvia's boyfriend.

Personal Enjoyment: 4 -- I liked it a lot. Highly enjoyable and very entertaining, with perhaps an issue or two that tempered my pleasure. I’d enjoy reading it again.

There are millions of books out there now.
But, how to find the really good ones?
This author is one of the best I've lucked upon in a long time!

She builds a wonderful story around believable characters and keeps the reader hooked throughout the entire book.

I was only hoping for a prologue explaining how Tressa was doing post-surgery!

How do I get on this writer's list for previewing books??? She's a jewel God has placed here to use her writing skills not to preach but to encourage readers to open their minds to the way God perceives and urges us in the path He knows is right for us and yet leaves the doors open for our choices!!!
Four and a half stars for Hallowed Halls!! Loved meeting Joy and all her family and friends. Appreciate the author's storytelling skills -- excellent plot, complex characters, and very interesting plot. A research experiment gone wrong -- someone dies -- someone covers it up -- a crazy cat lady ---a lecherous boss -- runaway teen -- what's not to love in the book!! Everyone has secrets, which the authors skillfully reveal, and keep you wanting more! Though, book will obviously have a sequel, there is no cliff hanger! Drama, suspense, angst, romance, troubled family dynamics, and small-town mindset by some makes this a great read!!
The plot is driven by implausible secrets and a deadly undiagnosed medical issue targeting multiple generations of a wealthy family. The characters just seem to float around, being oddly inactive in their own lives.

I did find it odd that so many people were using a 15-year-old girl as a sexual sounding board. Should the young daughter of the man you're dating know that you're a virgin in your 30s? I'd be reluctant to share that kind of detail with a kid, but nobody seems to think twice about what Tressa truly needs or what kind of emotional resources are appropriate to draw from her.
I love Hannah Alexander's books and "Hallowed Halls" is another keeper. I won't summarize the story since the publisher's synopsis is included on and other websites that offer the book for sale. Some authors are able to draw the reader into the story to such a degree that you feel like one of the characters yourself 88i88i8i8>b. The characters are so multidimensional that you feel you've know them personally and truly care about their future. This is definitely one of those books. The scenes can almost be seen, heard, smelled, tasted and felt as all the senses are engaged. She is truly a gifted writer, and there is not only a depth of emotion but also sufficient drama and action to drive this well thought out plot at a good pace to a satisfactory ending-no cliffhangers or feelings that you have to read another book to complete this one. I am so glad that I will meet these characters in the next book of the series after reading the sample first chapter of the next book included. This a sweet romance but so much more. Some of the characters are Christians but there is no sermonizing that can turn readers off. No issues with language, violence or sex aree noted and the story does not require them. One of the main characters is a 15 year old girl, who is trying to survive life in a broken family and is wonderfully wise beyond her years, who might draw adolescent interest to the story. There are adult issues addressed but nothing that should be detrimental to most older teens, however, parents might want to read it first.
