Red Sonja, now older and battle-scarred, has turned away from the warrior's lifestyle of bloodshed and vengeance. As the headmistress of an academy for sword maidens, she prepares a new generation of She-Devils to face whatever conflicts and horrors the Hyborian Age can muster. However, when the fate of the world once again stands upon the edge of blade, Sonja must come out of retirement to wield it! Deep in the shadowy realm of southern Stygia, cultists have performed a blood ritual, giving birth to Sutekh, the son of the ancient god Set. A winged reptilian with the power to draw human souls out of his victim's bodies, the vicious demigod raises an army to conquer all mankind. Kingdoms fall one by one before his wrath, and the temples of all other gods are razed to the ground. Red Sonja, aided by her prize pupils, must blaze a path to the fabled God Caves in search of the only divine power capable of matching Sutekh's might... but to win the favor of her patron goddess Scathach, Sonja must face the failings of her earlier life and make a terrible sacrifice of her own. Acclaimed author Nancy A. Collins (Vampirella, Swamp Thing) joins with Luke Lieberman (writer of the sweeping Queen Sonja saga) and skilled artist Fritz Casas (The Blood Queen) to tell a heart-wrenching, world-shattering tale of the once and future She-Devil!

Red Sonja Vulture Circle eBook Nancy Collins Luke Lieberman Fritz Casas Reviews

An adventure of an older retired Sonja forced to take to the battlefield one more time. The art for the climax is a bit muddled and good have been clearer as to what was happening, but the story is a good one none the less.
Okay, this was pretty terrible. It failed on every level as a Red Sonja story.

The basic idea - that it's about an older, battle-weary Sonja who's hung up her chainmail bikini and begun teaching a new generation of warrior women - is interesting, I guess. Of course anyone who buys the comics because the covers all feature the traditional nubile redhead in a chainmail bikini is going to be disappointed, since that's not the Red Sonja they get on the pages inside. Oh, except for when she becomes the avatar of a goddess and then runs around naked bathed in flames.

So, why did this fail as a Red Sonja story? Well, first of all, it's not really swords and sorcery. I mean, there are swords, and there is sorcery, but Robert E. Howard stories had a particular aesthetic. It was the pulp S&S style of Conan, whom Red Sonja emulated (even though she was not actually a Robert E. Howard character, but an amalgam of several of his characters created much later by Marvel Comics). This is the dark fantasy world of Hyborea, where you don't find wizards on every street corner like in an AD&D campaign.

Vulture's Circle, on the other hand, reads very much like an AD&D campaign. Sometimes you can even see the characters "leveling up." It also reads like a superhero comic. Starting with Sonja as the Professor X of a school for gifted female students (so a bunch of teen girls are sent out to save the world and teach armies of men how to fight - really?), we get a literally world-threatening villain who conquers most of Hyborea before being beaten back by a super-powered Sonja who's been invested with the powers of the goddess "Scathach." I don't know if Scathach was ever actually mentioned before in Hyborian mythology - the actual Scathach is a figure from Celtic mythology, and Howard certainly borrowed from many cultures in creating his world.

Vulture's Circle throws a mishmash of cultures and names taken from Howard's stories, but little else. So yeah, there's mention of Set and Mitra and Crom, and there are Kushites and Shemmites and Aquilonians and Corinthians and Stygians and Khitaians, etc., but they're really all just names pasted onto a multicultural epic AD&D campaign.

And that part about Sonja becoming a goddess - even the art shows her literally flying around and hurling magic swords like mutant energy beams.

On the other hand, what you don't get is a hottie in a chainmail bikini, except on the cover, so even if you were just reading Red Sonja for that, you will be disappointed.

There is little originality here, there is nothing that is true to traditional Conan/Red Sonja stories, and even the dialog keeps alternating between vaguely Hyborean "By Crom!"s and modern snappy patter more appropriate to the X-Men.

I've heard good things about Gail Simone's run of Red Sonja comics, so maybe I need to check those out instead.
